Mistakes To Avoid When Getting a New Website
Jun 13, 2014 by PaulNowadays, a company’s website is really important because it’s often the first thing that customers come across. So depending on how the website has been designed, they can walk away with a favorable impression or an unfavorable one. As a result, it’s a good idea to get a custom designed website where you can specify exactly what you’re looking for and how you want to present your company. Here are a few common mistakes that people make when setting up their websites:
Making it too busy.
In general, it’s not a very good idea to make your website too busy, with too many images, patterns, fonts etc. Using a dark background and a light font is also a bit jarring for most people. This is a technique you could use every once in a while, just for effect but it’s not a good idea to use it throughout your website. In general, try to keep it clean and readable.
Too much text.
When people are reading on the internet, they don’t want to read large chunks of information in a small font. They prefer it if the information is kept short and sweet and divided into subheadings, bullet points or lists. If you want to emphasize a certain point, you can make the font bold.
Sales-driven content.
Generally, people can tell when they’re being sold something. And this is likely to turn them off. They would prefer to read content which is not sales-driven but informational. They want to know more about the product or service you’re selling before they decide whether to buy it or not. This doesn’t mean you need to start recommending your competitors but just tone down the promotional aspect of your website.
Too many or too few images.
It’s a good idea to have an image with every piece of content on your website, if possible. However, too many images will make your website hard to load. And putting in irrelevant images can turn customers off. Sometimes, images can look too “stagey” or too “perfect” as well. You need to find images that really express what you’re about as a company rather than just letting a third party choose them for you.
