How Can You Measure and Manage Your Online Reputation?

May 31, 2019 by kidd

Online reputation is hard to measure. You need professional tools and aggregate analysis sites to give you a number to put on your site's online credibility. But there are a few ways for you to get a rough estimate of your online reputation, as well as a few ways to boost it along the way.

Who is talking about you besides you?

A lot of running a small business is self-promotion. You know you've made headway when people are organically talking about your business or your products. This traffic can include anything from an independent blog post reviewing your products to a thread on Reddit or forums. Part of your online reputation relies on other people talking about you without your direct intervention or prompting.

Are you keeping up with your page on local directories?

One of the best ways to manage your online profile is to answer your reviews. Building up profiles on local business directories like Yelp, Yahoo, and several dozen others is absolutely essential. But the work doesn't stop there. You have to actively monitor these sites for positive reviews that can help build up your community and negative reviews that you need to address and make right.

What happens when you search for your business?

While typing your business name or specific services into Google won't give you any statistics or actionable information, it's always a good idea to know what other users see the first type they search for your business. You can see if your actual website pops up or if it's a competitor. It might pull up a similarly named but completely different business altogether. You can also see if your business name and a few keywords pull up a blog post that mentions you, a scathing review, or nothing at all.
