Find Out Where Your Website Traffic is Coming From with Google Analytics

Jan 16, 2015 by Paul

Having a website isn't just about being visible on the Internet. You have to actively attract new and loyal customers to your site through various marketing efforts. And by using Google Analytics, you can learn which sources drive the most traffic to your website and adapt your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy accordingly.

This is important since you'll find out which of your marketing efforts are most effective. If you learn that most of your traffic comes from social media, for example, then you can decide to invest even more in Facebook and Twitter.

Google explains how businesses can use website analytics on its Help page. According to Google, businesses can use Google Analytics to evaluate their marketing campaign and identify effective marketing efforts:

"If you're running the same campaign through multiple sources (e.g., Google, Yahoo, Bing), you can view the data by Campaign, and add the secondary dimension Source so you can compare the results from the different sources side by side. If you find low productivity from a particular source, you can try a different campaign there, or redistribute your campaign spending to the more profitable sources."

Google, Yahoo, and Bing all have similar search algorithms, but they vary in important ways. It's possible to have a highly successful campaign on Bing but fail to achieve a good page rank on Google. With Google Analytics, you'll learn which source plays the most important role in driving traffic to your website.

This is exactly how digital marketing campaigns are successful. Businesses execute marketing efforts, find out which are most effective, and adjust their campaigns accordingly. It's a trial-and-error strategy that's more effective with the use of website analytics.

With Google Analytics, you can learn where your website traffic is coming from. Then you can start to direct your investments to the marketing efforts which prove to be the most successful.
