Modern Web Design
May 13, 2013 by PaulModern Web Design: One of the biggest, if not the biggest trend in web design at the moment is minimalism. Getting rid of unnecessary elements that take away from a visitor’s experience is essential in today’s world of designing. The minimalist look has been seen throughout the 20th and 21st century and is thought of as a design that strips down to the “bare minimal”. View our web design portfolio.
Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe pretty much summed up the meaning behind minimalism, quoted “Less is more”. If you love the look and feel of a bare bones approach, here are a few design tips we suggest:
Aesthetically Pleasing and Easy to Use Web Design
A simple design calms people and makes them feel welcomed to a website. If the design is cluttered with animations and widgets, it gets a tad too overwhelming and the visitor won't stay for long. A fresh and innovative design with minimalist elements is the way to go if you want to be complimented. A simplistic design for an ecommerce site is also beneficial because your products will be in the forefront without a gaudy overpowering border, header, and footer. The right content used in the right way is key.
Colour Palettes
Colours that mesh and intertwine with each other is especially eye pleasing, so avoid harsh neon hues and two shades that don’t go hand in hand. The colours should also work with the logo and whatever content your site holds. For example, if your site is a feminine fashion blog, use soft pinks, purples, and creams. For a corporate site, greys, blues, and white is fitting.
Typography and White Space
Typography is important with minimalism because there is so much clear space that needs to be filled with an interesting and creative font. A large logo with stylish font is a plus, but keep in mind it needs to be readable. Having plenty of white space on your site will emphasize your posts better, so don’t go overboard with too many graphics no matter how cool you think they look.
